About this role
Clinical Externs work in the capacity as an unregulated health care provider (UCP). They collaborate with the healthcare team under supervision of an appointed regulated healthcare professional. Externs bring varying levels of knowledge, skills, and judgement based on their education and past experience.
Externs assist with patient care activities such as ambulation, toileting, bathing, feeding, and other needs for patient comfort. They work closely with the supervising regulated health professional (RHP) to ensure they have the required knowledge, skills, and judgment. They request assistance when needed and alert team members to any patient condition changes.
Positions are available across all Trillium Health Partners sites including Mississauga Hospital, Credit Valley Hospital, and Queensway Health Centre. Externs report to assigned shifts and maintain confidentiality per hospital policies. They demonstrate effective interpersonal skills in a team-oriented clinical setting.
THP provides an autonomous yet supervised environment to develop clinical skills, knowledge, and confidence. This supports externs transitioning into registered roles upon completing studies. Role is temporary part-time up to 6 months at CUPE ST 70 level.
Requirements
- Enrolled as Paramedic student in second year of an approved Paramedic Program
- Enrolled as Physiotherapy student in any year of a PEAC-accredited program
- Enrolled as Occupational Therapy student in any year of a CAOT-accredited program
- Enrolled as Respiratory Therapy student in second or third year of accredited program
- Enrolled as Undergraduate Medicine student in final year of CACMS-accredited MD program
- Recent graduate from CACMS-accredited MD program awaiting accredited residency
- Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing
- Evidence of successful learning experiences in recent clinical placements
Responsibilities
- Provide patient care under supervision of a regulated health professional (RHP) consistent with organizational policies and professional standards
- Assist with ambulation, toileting, bathing, feeding, and other care activities to meet patient needs and comfort
- Work with supervising RHP to ensure knowledge, skills, and judgment for all assigned duties
- Request assistance with duties as needed and alert team to patient condition changes or concerns
- Report to all assigned shifts or notify Manager of absence prior to shift start
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with hospital policies and procedures
- Demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills
