Specimens are obtained from operating rooms for frozen sectioning and gross reporting.

Daily work involves specimen photography and radiography as needed along with collection and distribution of tissue to the tumor bank and investigators. Equipment used includes cryostats, gross stations, dictation systems, x-ray machines, and bone saws. Patient information is consistently verified on specimens and requisitions.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a NAACLS accredited post baccalaureate Pathologists’ Assistant Training Program
  • ASCP BOR certified or ASCP BOR exam eligible
  • Bachelor’s degree with major or minor in biological or allied health sciences
  • Pathologist Assistant or Grossing experience
  • Must be certified PA (ASCP or department approved certifying agency)
  • Minimum of 1 year experience required

Responsibilities

  • Perform gross examination and dissection of all surgical pathology specimens including complex surgical resections
  • Obtain specimens from operating rooms and perform examination including frozen sectioning and gross reporting
  • Perform specimen photography and radiography as needed
  • Collect and distribute tissue to tumor bank and investigators
  • Verify patient information on specimen and requisition consistently
  • Dissect specimens and select proper tissue sections according to department protocol
  • Describe specimens accurately and concisely
  • Operate cryostat, gross stations, dictation systems, x-ray equipment, and bone saws
