About this role
Immediate need for temporary (5-6 months) full-time Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA), with possibility to become permanent. May 2026 graduates encouraged to apply. This position alternates between Rutland and Fitchburg locations with Monday-Friday daytime hours.
Devereux Massachusetts and Rhode Island is a nationally recognized organization dedicated to helping children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other psychological, emotional, and behavioral disorders. School locations in Rutland and Fitchburg are private, fully approved special needs day and residential schools for students ages 6-21. Classroom structure matches students’ needs through an interdisciplinary approach with individual plans.
The curriculum aligns with Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and coordinates with referring school districts. Flexibility in academic programming meets students’ needs. As SLPA, implement IEP goals under SLP direction while assisting with screenings, documentation, and augmentative communication instruction.

Requirements
- Completion of accredited Speech Language Pathology Assistant training program
- Eligibility for ASHA Speech-Language Pathology Assistant certification
- Ability to work under direct supervision of a licensed Speech Language Pathologist
- Knowledge of Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for special needs students
- Familiarity with students ages 6-21 with Autism Spectrum Disorders and behavioral challenges
- Experience or training in speech, language, and hearing screenings
- Understanding of augmentative and alternative communication devices
Responsibilities
- Implement goals and objectives outlined in the Individual Education Program (IEP) under the direction of the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP)
- Structure the classroom physical and social environments to promote positive goal-directed responses, social interactions, and skill acquisition
- Assist the SLP with speech, language, and hearing screenings without clinical interpretation, student assessments, and documentation of performance
- Provide information to team members for students with communication and/or swallowing disorders, including programming and instruction in augmentative and alternative communication devices
- Assist with clerical duties such as preparing materials, scheduling activities as directed by the SLP, and maintenance checks of equipment
