About this role
St. Charles Health System is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist to perform, interpret, and report clinical laboratory testing on a variety of human biological specimen types. This role is vital to our multi-hospital organization and outreach community, supporting all disciplines of laboratory medicine.
In this position, you will ensure that specimens for analysis are appropriate and adequate to provide meaningful results, exercising professional judgment to reject or request recollection when needed. You will perform laboratory analysis in accordance with our policies, procedures, and quality standards, accurately documenting results into the Laboratory Information System.
You will work within a team that values accountability, caring, and teamwork, and you may be asked to review and provide feedback on the work of other caregivers. This role does not directly manage other caregivers but serves as a resource to medical providers within your credentialed scope of practice.

Requirements
- Ability to perform, interpret, and report clinical laboratory testing on human biological specimens
- Proficiency in recognizing when specimen condition or adequacy may impact test results and taking appropriate remedial actions
- Knowledge of quality control, quality assurance, proficiency testing, and calibration procedures
- Skill in performing and documenting cleaning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of analytic instruments and test systems
- Ability to recognize suspect test results based on laboratory-defined criteria, system alerts, or professional judgment
- Competence in performing all specimen handling, reagent preparation, and chemical/biologics handling in a manner ensuring safety
- Professional and ethical conduct in accordance with all regulatory requirements
- Ability to serve as a resource to medical providers within credentialed scope of practice
Responsibilities
- Perform laboratory analysis of human biological specimens submitted for testing in accordance with laboratory policies, procedures, and quality standards
- Accurately document results into the Laboratory Information System and recognize, report, and document critical test results in a timely manner
- Ensure specimens are appropriate and adequate for analysis, exercising professional judgment to reject, request recollection, or consult with the ordering provider
- Perform, evaluate, and document quality control, quality assurance, proficiency testing, and calibration procedures according to laboratory policies
- Ensure analytic instruments are properly calibrated and maintained, performing cleaning, maintenance, and troubleshooting as needed
- Review and evaluate test results prior to release, recognizing suspect results based on defined criteria, system alerts, or professional judgment
- Obtain blood samples via arterial, venous, or capillary puncture according to laboratory policies and procedures (site dependent duty)
- Appropriately refer issues beyond scope of practice to a discipline specialist, supervisor, or pathologist
Benefits
- Pay range for MLS: $37.73 - $56.60 per hour
- Pay range for MLT: $29.96 - $44.93 per hour
