About this role

The Digital Pathology Department provides continuity of care for patients through surgical pathology cases performed at OSUWMC and secondary reviews of cases referred from outside institutions. These services support clinical care, clinical trials, and research activities involving surgical pathology specimens and digital pathology services.

The Digital Processing Technician provides high quality customer service for the Department of Pathology. This position involves the preparation and processing of microscopy slides for scanning as well as directing materials to the appropriate pathologists and other pathology personnel.

This role responds to requests for diagnostic pathology specimens from investigators, the Digital Pathology Scan Center, OSU Clinical Trials Office, pathology support staff, and external parties. The technician gathers necessary information, monitors request appropriateness, and ensures proper approvals for specimen use from on-site and off-site locations.

The Processing Technician records specimens and projects in Beaker and other databases to track completion stages. This position interacts with pathologists daily and collaborates with Histology and Surgical Pathology services while reporting to the Manager of Pathology Support Services.

Requirements

  • High school education required
  • Associates degree or higher preferred in medical laboratory technology or biological science or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Meets minimum continuing education requirements
  • Meets health surveillance requirements
  • Demonstrates competence in technical, interpersonal and cognitive skills required to meet essential job functions

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and process microscopy slides for scanning
  • Direct materials to appropriate pathologists and pathology personnel
  • Respond to requests for diagnostic pathology specimens from investigators and external parties
  • Gather necessary information for processing requests and validate requester appropriateness
  • Ensure proper approval for use of diagnostic specimens from banked locations
  • Record specimens and projects in Beaker and other databases for tracking completion stages
