This per diem Registered Nurse position in the Perioperative department at Shenango Valley offers the opportunity to coordinate total nursing care for surgical patients using professional AORN standards and the O.R. process. The role involves participating in patient care, providing instruction to patients and families, and delivering outcomes appropriate to each procedure.

Day-to-day responsibilities include developing and implementing individualized nursing care plans, resolving patient care problems, and interacting with patients, families, surgical staff, and other team members. The nurse must be able to perform operative procedures, lift and transport patients, provide proper positioning, and respond to emergency situations.

The work environment is a normal patient care setting with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, or temperature changes, though the role involves standing or walking most of the time. The nurse may be subject to distasteful patient care activities and exposure to communicable diseases, and must be able to take limited call with a 15 to 20 minute response time to the hospital.

This position offers the chance to work in a supportive surgical team environment while building expertise in perioperative nursing. The role also provides on-the-job training for those with less experience, along with opportunities to complete advanced certifications such as TNCC within the first year.

Requirements

Professional knowledge of nursing theory and practice from an accredited School of Nursing
Current State Nursing License
ACLS, PALS, and BLS certifications required
Must complete Trauma Nursing Core Certification (TNCC) within one year of being in the position
Thereafter, must complete 8 hours of trauma continuing education annually
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull 20-50 lbs occasionally, 10-25 lbs frequently, or up to 10 lbs constantly
Ability to stand or walk for most of the shift and respond to call within 15-20 minutes

Responsibilities

Coordinate total nursing care for patients using professional AORN standards and the O.R. process
Participate in patient care and provide instruction to patients and families in the pre/post-operative setting
Develop and implement a plan for nursing care appropriate to each patient's mental and physical well-being
Resolve patient care problems and interact with patients, families, surgical staff, and other team members
Perform operative procedures and provide proper positioning for patients
Lift and transport patients, maintain patient comfort and safety
Respond to emergency situations as needed
Provide treatment and maintain patient comfort and safety throughout the surgical experience
