Daily tasks include checking time stamps on requisitions, ensuring specimens are labeled per protocol, and registering patient information. The assistant makes slides and cassettes, maintains equipment like embedding stations and tissue processors, and delivers containers to the operating room frozen section room as required.

Requirements
- Ontario secondary school diploma
- Graduate of certified medical laboratory assistant/technician program
- Current certification and registration with OSMT and/or CSMLS
- Minimum two years experience working in a hospital pathology laboratory setting preferred
- Medical terminology preferred
- Knowledge of Meditech, Paradigm and Microsoft Office programs an asset
- Comfortable dealing with surgical and autopsy specimens and the deceased
- Excellent organization and communication skills
Responsibilities
- Check for time stamp on all requisitions and ensure specimens are labeled according to protocol and match requisitions
- Register patient information in computer as needed; accession specimens, labels, numbers specimens
- Make slides and cassettes, ensuring numbers are correct and traceable to original
- Maintain embedding stations, routine stainers, tissue processors, cover slippers, solvent recycler, fridges, freezers, ovens, and other equipment as assigned
- Discard blocks, slides, requisitions, and wet specimens according to retention directives and waste management protocols
- Deliver containers to operating room frozen section room as required
- Actively participate in the Laboratory quality management system and process improvements
