About this role
Medical Laboratory Scientists perform a variety of laboratory tests requiring multiple steps and techniques along with professional judgment. Tests cover Blood Bank, Coagulation, Hematology, Urinalysis, Microbiology, and Chemistry departments. These results aid clinicians in diagnosis and treatment decisions.
Daily responsibilities include processing specimens and operating analyzers while evaluating quality control data to ensure reliable results. The scientist has full access to patient health information to correlate test findings. Medication storage areas (excluding controlled substances) may be accessed as needed.
The position works Monday through Friday from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM with on-call rotation every fourth weekend. This evening shift offers a unique schedule for those who prefer afternoon-to-night hours. Collaboration with clinical staff is essential for accurate patient care.
This role allows the application of theoretical knowledge of clinical laboratory science to real-world patient outcomes. The hospital setting provides exposure to diverse testing and complex cases. Professional judgment is honed through daily quality control evaluation and test interpretation.
Requirements
- Medical Technologist track: At least sixty semester hours of college with training in a certified Medical Technology training program.
- Medical Technologist: Current registration or eligibility by ASCP or AMT.
- Medical Laboratory Technician track: Associate’s degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
- Medical Laboratory Technician: Registration or eligibility by ASCP or AMT.
- Must possess full range of body motion to pass basic FIT test including walking, kneeling, standing, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, reaching, and sitting for extended periods.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of laboratory tests in Blood Bank, Coagulation, Hematology, Urinalysis, Microbiology, and Chemistry.
- Apply professional judgment to evaluate quality control data and ensure reliable test results.
- Operate and maintain laboratory analyzers and equipment according to procedures.
- Access patient health information to correlate test findings with clinical conditions.
- Access medication storage areas (excluding controlled substances) as related to job responsibilities.
- Document and report test results accurately for clinician use in diagnosis and treatment.
- Participate in on-call rotation every fourth weekend.
