As a Microbiology Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist, you will play a vital role in diagnosing and managing human illness by providing accurate, precise, and timely patient test results.

Your day-to-day work involves performing complex analysis of all body fluids and tissues, including blood, urine, spinal fluid, and other specimens that may be contaminated with infectious diseases. You will use automation, computerization, and manual methods, while also handling quality control, instrument operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting to ensure reliable data before release for diagnosis and treatment.

You will collaborate with clinicians, physician office staff, and laboratory associates, communicating professionally on the telephone and in person. The role requires interpreting information to make judgmental decisions, troubleshooting technical procedures, and using knowledge of medical correlation, physiologic factors, and medication effects to assess the validity of laboratory data.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (Required).
  • Registered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
  • AMT Certification is considered equivalent to ASCP.
  • Ability to handle blood, tissue, fecal matter, sputum, urine, spinal fluid, and other body fluids.
  • Knowledge of safety and infection control practices.
  • Critical thinking, facilitation, and leadership abilities.
  • Advanced customer service skills for interaction with clinicians, clients, and patients.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex analysis of all body fluids and tissues, including blood, urine, spinal fluid, and other specimens.
  • Determine the reliability of all analytic data before release as patient measurement for diagnosis and treatment.
  • Interpret information to make judgmental decisions and troubleshoot technical procedures and instruments.
  • Utilize knowledge of medical correlation of data, laboratory parameters, physiologic factors, medication effects, and specific medical treatments to assess the validity of laboratory data.
  • Perform quality control checks on each procedure, reagents, stains, and equipment, and document and interpret all QC data.
  • Document and review maintenance logs to assure optimum system performance and guarantee valid data.
  • Provide mentorship to new lab associates, medical laboratory technicians, and students.
  • Communicate with patients and their families, using service recovery where necessary.
