About this role

The University of New Mexico's Department of Pathology, Division of Anatomic Pathology, seeks a highly motivated Neuropathologist at all academic ranks on the Clinician Educator track. This position is part of a university-wide workforce expansion and offers a competitive salary with a 6-year promotion cycle.

Responsibilities include providing neurosurgical pathology services in a growing academic tertiary care center with a regional outside consult service. The role also involves participation in diagnostic and teaching activities for residents, fellows, and medical students, with optional translational research opportunities.

Collaboration is central to this role, leveraging a partnership with TriCore Reference Laboratory for in-house esoteric testing in anatomic pathology. The position benefits from fully staffed gross room support with four Pathologist Assistants and additional resident coverage, eliminating faculty grossing, and remote/digital frozen section diagnostic capabilities for many after-hours calls.

No autopsy coverage is required or expected. Requirements

  • MD or DO degree with board certification or eligibility in Anatomic Pathology
  • Subspecialty fellowship training in Neuropathology
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in the state of New Mexico
  • Experience in diagnostic neuropathology and teaching in an academic medical setting
  • Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with clinical services and tumor boards

Responsibilities

  • Provide neurosurgical pathology services in a growing academic tertiary care center with a regional outside consult service
  • Participate in diagnostic and teaching activities for residents, fellows, and medical students
  • Engage with clinical services for the NCI-designated UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center and collaborate with neurooncologists and neurosurgeons in a multidisciplinary tumor board
  • May participate in translational research activities if desired (not a requirement for promotion)
  • Provide surgical pathology coverage as needed, a consideration given special attention for applicants willing to do so
  • Utilize remote/digital frozen section diagnostic capabilities to manage after-hours calls from home
