About this role

The registered nurse (RN, RN II, RN III) performs professional nursing activities to help patients achieve or regain maximum physical, emotional, or social function. Role functions are governed by the Nurse Practice Act, administrative code, and professional nursing standards.

Day-to-day duties include completing initial assessments and documenting required data, collecting and analyzing pertinent information for admission, and involving the patient's support system in care. The nurse acts as an advocate, explains patient rights, and assists in the orientation process while maintaining sensitivity to individual stressors.

This role works closely with the health team, consulting other members as patient conditions and treatment goals warrant. The nurse participates in care conferences, develops and updates treatment plans, and ensures compliance with federal and state statutes alongside the Patient Accounts department.

Requirements

  • Current registered nurse licensure in the state of employment
  • Knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act, administrative code, and professional nursing standards
  • Ability to perform comprehensive patient assessments and document accurately
  • Experience in behavioral health or psychiatric nursing preferred
  • Strong understanding of patient advocacy, rights, and confidentiality
  • Skill in collaborating with multidisciplinary health team members
  • Ability to develop and update treatment plans with measurable goals
  • Competence in identifying potential for self-abuse, suicidality, or assaultive behavior

Responsibilities

  • Complete initial assessments and document as required
  • Collect, record, and analyze pertinent data for admission assessment, including patient strengths, cultural factors, medical status, and medication history
  • Involve patient support systems in assessment and documentation
  • Act as an advocate for patients by explaining rights and obtaining necessary signatures
  • Assist in patient orientation process, including contraband search and unit safety procedures
  • Initiate and update treatment plan and documentation as required
  • Participate in planning and modifying the patient's plan of care, including care conferences and developing age-appropriate interventions
  • Identify, interpret, and document information from nursing interview, observation, physical assessment, and diagnostic data, and confer with other health care professionals
