About this role

The Gross Counter Technician utilizes training and knowledge to accurately process specimens and ensure all support systems are operated according to established procedures. This role in the Laboratory Department reports directly to the Laboratory Supervisor. It demands respect for the irretrievability of each submitted sample.

Daily tasks include providing pathology staff with detailed case information such as size, color, weight, dimensions, count, cassette labeling, comments, and techniques employed per the gross department manual. Technicians perform accurate data entry and notify the supervisor of situations beyond their education, training, or experience. They prioritize tasks and adapt to changing demands while maintaining focus.

Professionals adhere to all department protocols and procedures, delivering accurate and productive work within tight timeframes. They assist in other lab areas as directed and participate as team players with reliable attendance. Excellent organizational skills enable detailed multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment.

The role fosters growth through participation in special projects and assignments requested by the Manager or Director. Physical demands include prolonged sitting, repetitive hand, wrist, and shoulder motion, and occasional lifting up to 25 lbs. Working knowledge of office equipment supports effective professional interactions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a chemical or biological science

Responsibilities

  • Accurately process specimens using training and knowledge while operating support systems per established procedures
  • Recognize irretrievability of samples and process each specimen with respect
  • Provide pathology staff with case details including size, color, weight, dimensions, count, cassette labeling, comments, and techniques
