Registered Nurses in NICU provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and families on health conditions, and offer emotional support. They perform systematic patient assessments, analyze data, and determine nursing diagnoses to create and evaluate care plans with the interprofessional team.

Day-to-day duties include recording vital signs, addressing abnormalities, administering medications and IV fluids, and providing wound care. NICU nurses operate and monitor specialized equipment like incubators, ventilators, radiant warmers, infusion pumps, and phototherapy units, ensuring proper cleaning and decontamination.

Working collaboratively, nurses facilitate safe patient admission, transfer, and discharge while contributing to a learning culture. They lead changes in healthcare, promote patient health, and perform essential life support including Neonatal Resuscitation, maintaining outstanding patient experiences every time.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in performing essential life support such as Basic Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation
  • Knowledge of diagnostic tests and laboratory examinations
  • Ability to maintain and update technical and clinical skills related to NICU nursing practice
  • Expertise in operating and monitoring NICU-specific equipment like incubators, ventilators, and phototherapy units
  • Skill in systematic patient assessment, data analysis, and determining nursing diagnoses
  • Competence in wound care management and assisting in invasive or non-invasive medical procedures

Responsibilities

  • Provide and coordinate patient care, educating patients and families about health conditions and offering emotional support
  • Assess and identify patients' needs, implement and monitor medical plans in collaboration with physicians and health care specialists
  • Perform systematic patient assessment and re-assessment, collecting and analyzing pertinent health data
  • Create and evaluate patient care plans with the interprofessional team, patient, and family
  • Record vital signs, recognize, address, and escalate abnormalities
  • Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and monitor for side effects and reactions
  • Operate and monitor specialized NICU equipment including incubators, ventilators, radiant warmers, infusion pumps, and phototherapy
  • Facilitate safe patient admission, transfer, and discharge
