The Department of Neurosurgery seeks an experienced surgical coder to perform highly specialized diagnosis and procedural coding for operative procedures and inpatient consulting services by faculty, including those in Gainesville and Halifax Regional Medical Center. The ideal candidate possesses thorough knowledge of anatomy, surgical and medical terminology coding, billing requirements of insurance carriers, and operating procedures of the department and hospitals.

Review operative reports and progress notes to determine billable services, verify or apply appropriate ICD-10 and CPT codes, and confirm physician attestation statements. Provide guidance and education to attending surgeons, fellows, and residents on coding issues, researching through professional associations, payer guidelines, and coding networks. Meet regularly with Department Chair or Administrator to review individual or product line coding issues.

Wells Department of Neurosurgery at University of Florida College of Medicine provides comprehensive clinical services for brain, spinal cord, and nervous system diseases, extending through regional programs for adults and pediatrics. It offers full spectrum neurosurgical and neuro-oncology treatments, with research labs developing new therapies and ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs.

Verify patient demographic and health insurance data accuracy, resolving discrepancies. Ensure no unsigned or missing operative records, enter charges for surgical and non-surgical inpatient events. Conduct chart reviews for regulatory compliance, capture all services, monitor and correct TES edits in Epic, and set up guarantor accounts with insurance details.

Requirements

  • Experienced surgical coder
  • Thorough knowledge of anatomy
  • Expertise in surgical and medical terminology coding
  • Working knowledge of billing requirements of insurance carriers
  • Familiarity with operating procedures of the department and hospitals
  • Ability to review operative reports for ICD-10 and CPT coding
  • Proficiency in Epic system for edits and insurance verification
  • Knowledge of physician attestation requirements
