About this role
The Chief Medical Officer leads the organization’s clinical staff, serving as a role model for professional excellence. They spearhead the development, approval, authorization, and implementation of clinical policies and procedures. This role establishes clear communication systems with the medical workforce throughout the organization.
Day-to-day involves overseeing quality and patient safety, collaborating with the Chief Quality Officer to develop annual plans with benchmarked indicators. They supervise peer review committees, evaluate medical staff via PPFP, OPPE, and FPPE criteria, and ensure evidence-based guidelines in high-risk areas. Regulatory compliance with Joint Commission International, HAAD, and others is paramount.
In a collaborative environment, the CMO attends corporate meetings, meets regularly with Department Heads, and fosters relationships with medical leaders and academics. They support Quality and Patient Safety Sub-Committees, oversee credentialing, and address sentinel events. Delegation to the Deputy Chief Medical Officer enhances team efficiency.
Growth opportunities include championing research collaboration, building clinical excellence reputation, and implementing strategies for operational excellence. Reviewing patient satisfaction drives service improvements across outpatient and inpatient care. This position advances the health system's standards through proactive leadership and innovation.
Requirements
- Proven leadership in clinical operations and medical staff management
- Expertise in quality improvement, patient safety, and peer review processes
- Knowledge of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and high-risk area protocols
- Experience with credentialing, privileging, and physician performance evaluations
- Familiarity with JCI, HAAD, and other healthcare regulatory standards
- Ability to oversee sentinel events, safety trends, and corrective actions
- Skills in collaborating with quality departments and clinical committees
