The Senior Resident Medical Officer coordinates and documents admission, management, and discharge planning of patients.

The SRMO conducts day-to-day assessment and management of patients, maintaining high levels of communication with patients and family regarding their condition and treatment. They communicate and coordinate care with the team, arranging consultations with other staff when appropriate. Discharge planning involves liaising with local medical officers and community-based care modalities for optimal patient care.

This role operates in a sub-acute environment, primarily in our ICU at St Vincents Private, where patients with complex and chronic medical problems require multidisciplinary care. The SRMO develops strong, productive, and respectful working relationships with the multidisciplinary workforce. They demonstrate initiative to resolve issues and share information with colleagues.

The SRMO year suits Residents (PGY3s and above) pursuing careers in internal medicine, rehabilitation, general practice, psychiatry, or palliative care. It is a 12-month fixed-term contract with potential for extension. Commitment to personal development and the organisational mission supports professional growth.

Requirements

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Completion of at least two postgraduate years
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Evidence of commitment to the principles of patient safety and clinical quality improvement
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with preparedness to participate in afterhours overtime
  • Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Mission and Values of the Mary Aikenhead Ministries

Responsibilities

  • Co-ordinating and documenting the admission, management and discharge planning of patients
  • Conducting day-to-day assessment and management of patients
  • Maintaining high levels of communication with patients and family regarding the nature of their condition and its treatment
  • Communicating and co-ordinating care with the team and arranging consultation with other staff when appropriate
  • Arranging discharge and liaising with local medical officers and other community based care modalities
  • Completing a comprehensive patient history from the patient and other relevant sources
  • Documenting the full history and physical examination within progress notes
  • Writing legible, accurate and signed progress notes every day and formulating a management plan in consultation with senior staff
